ACUPUNCTURE The World Health Organization recommends acupuncture as an effective treatment for allergies, respiratory conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, gynecological problems, nervous conditions, disorders of the eyes, nose and throat and musculoskeletal injuries. It is an effective and low-cost treatment for headaches and chronic pain associated with problems like back injuries and arthritis. How it works: The Three Centre System Acupuncture stimulates the small nerves in muscles which send impulses to the spinal cord which causes analgesia by activating three centres: - The Spinal Cord – enkephalin blocks incoming pain messages.
- Midbrain – enkephalin inhibits pain transmission
- Hypothalamus and Pituitary – B – endorphin is released into the blood and cerebrospinal fluid causing analegesia at a distance.
Scientific studies have shown that acupuncture stimulates the secretion of bodily chemicals such as endorphins, neurotransmitters, and hormones. Acupuncture can be thought of as a way for the body to tap into its own “internal pharmacy” to promote healing. At Kings, acupuncture treatment is provided by physiotherapists who have taken additional post-graduate level training.
